Description
In 1995 Steve Firlotte and Steve Barker designed the all-tube “Vac Rac” system. This modular, vacuum tube pro audio system featured ultra high quality components, robust and attractive design, and superb sonics. Though the line got great reviews and was embraced by many famous engineers, production was limited to a small number of units, and the line was discontinued in 2000. The system for sale here is a unique configuration that was built by Steve Firlotte in 1996. This system features a well ventilated, gorgeous 3 RU chassis. This chassis includes 10 individual tube mic preamps, each utilizing a custom input transformer, a shielded General Electric military style 6072A dual triode for the preamp stage, and a wide bandwidth Sylvania 12FQ7 for the output stage. The mother board, capacitors, resistors, tube sockets, regulators and controls are in super clean, like new condition. Each of the 10 tube preamp channels has an 8 position detented Gain control, a 10 position detented Level Trim control, a Phantom Power switch, a 20 dB Pad switch, and a Phase switch. (They are identical to the VacRac Tube Preamp modules but there are no Instrument Ins or Line Ins, and no VU meters.)The mic inputs are transformer balanced, output is 40 ohms unbalanced. Mic input Z is 200 ohms nominal, line impedance is 100K. XLR connectors for Mic and Line Out are on the rear. There is also a 1/4” TRS jack for line out. Max gain is 53 dB, equivalent input noise is better than 126 dBm, output S/N ratio is -85 dB. Maximum output level is a hefty +30 dB. The super rugged, high power 300 volt power supply utilizes 4 5881/6L6GC power pentodes as active regulators, cooled by a small quiet fan. The power transformer is a large, laminated type, that can be converted to 240 volts. The beefy power supply is housed in a road case type enclosure and comes with a 2 meter cable. The supply can be kept in the case and placed behind, or to the side of your rack. (Due to its large transformer, the supply should be located at least 2 feet away from other audio gear.Every aspect of this system has been fully tested and is in excellent operating condition. The cosmetic condition is outstanding, with just a few minor flaws on the front panel. All the electronics are fully guaranteed for 90 days. If you live outside of North America we’ll convert the power supply to 240 volts, on request.The ten-channel chassis and power supply are heavy and will be shipped in separate cartons, very carefully packed. Normally we ship by Fedex ground, and shipping cost within the continental US by this method will be approx. $100.
