Below is the product description from the Revel site.Revel Salon voted Stereophile Magazine's 1999 Speaker of the Year! Revel is the only loudspeaker manufacturer to combine unparalleled music and home theater performance with exquisite appearance. While too expansive to fully summarize on these pages, some details will help explain why this virtuoso is a clear departure from all other loudspeakers. Development The development of the Salon™ illustrates Revel’s unique qualities. Advanced research in psychoacoustics coupled with unequalled testing facilities afforded by its corporate parent, Harman International Industries, have yielded a new level of understanding about how loudspeakers perform in "real world" home installations. In living spaces, sound reflections from the walls, ceiling and floor reach a listener’s ear quickly, and are as important as the sound heard directly from a loudspeaker. What a person "hears," then, is actually a combination of sounds from a variety of directions (see illustrations). Revel combines detailed scientific knowledge of the factors that determine how a speaker will sound in a variety of home environments with the unique ability to quantitatively measure and test these parameters. One of the more important characteristics of a speaker in its interaction with room surfaces is called its "off-axis response." Loudspeaker drivers cannot radiate all frequencies equally in all directions. This results in different response curves when measured directly in front, to the sides, above, below, and behind the speaker (see illustrations). The more that the sounds reflected from these various directions differ from the direct sound, the less accurate will be the sound that the listener hears. The off-axis response of the Salon™ is more accurate than any loudspeaker that we have ever tested. This optimized off-axis response ensures that reflections from room boundaries are not "colored." This is essential, since the reflections are such an important part of what a listener hears. User-controllable adjustments on the Salon help compensate for variations in room acoustical properties and loudspeaker positioning. This approach maximizes the Salon’s compatibility with the widest range of "real world" environments. Transducers At the heart of any loudspeaker system are the individual transducers. Enormous care and attention to detail has been employed in the design of the transducers used in the Salon. Revel’s ability to design and manufacture transducers has resulted in drive units whose performance far exceeds those available to ordinary manufacturers. The extraordinary 1.1" (28 mm) aluminum alloy dome tweeter sets a new standard for high frequency performance. As with all Salon drivers, the tweeter is pistonic throughout its operating range, in fact, to over 30 kHz. Combined with extraordinarily low distortion due to its unique magnetic system, the Salon tweeter provides breathtaking high frequency detail. An additional .75" (19 mm.) rear tweeter is utilized for superior in-room high frequency response. One of the keys to the Salon’s performance is the extraordinary mid-frequency transducer. This 4" (102 mm.) midrange, with its unusually large 1.5" (38 mm) voice coil, features a neodymium motor and titanium dome for an incredible stiffness to weight ratio that allows resonance-free, wide bandwidth operation. The inverted titanium dome is truly pistonic throughout its bandwidth. The 6.5" (165 mm.) mid-bass transducer and the three 8-inch (210 mm) woofers feature mica and carbon-filled co-polymer domes. Copper shorting rings decrease inductance and flux modulation. Large overhung voice coils feature very long windings, which dissipate heat far more efficiently than typical voice coils with short winding lengths. Networks Advanced computer assisted design (CAD) is utilized to precisely tailor each transducers response. The Salon's true 4th-order (24 dB/ octave) acoustic slopes result in optimized response without sonically degrading overlap, both on and off-axis. The result is a dramatic improvement in sound quality as compared to 1st-order (6 dB/octave) designs, which are shown as "Brand X" in the illustratons. Crossover Trimming Most loudspeakers are built with large tolerances that result in very significant audible variations between production units. In addition to the extraordinarily tight tolerances of Revel transducers, crossover elements for each Salon are individually trimmed to match each specific driver. This ensures that each Salon produced will be a virtual replica of the design reference (within one-half decibel). Were it not for this exclusive Revel tolerance, one could not know how their speakers compare to the original design prototype. Listening Tests To insure Revel’s superiority, competitor’s loudspeakers are compared by a panel of experienced and skilled listeners utilizing proprietary double blind listening techniques that, for the first time, adequately eliminate influences from speaker placement in the listening environment. These listening test results conclusively prove Salon’s superiority without any chance of prejudice, or influence from room acoustics.br>
