This is the last pair I have for sale of the three pairs I had.  The McIntosh XR290 system was and is considered by some as McIntosh's BEST Speaker System EVER. The XR290 speaker system was McIntosh's most expensive and extensive speaker system at the time that they were originally produced.  The pair that is in the first picture was the third pair which I had that I set up before it was shipped out. I have the pictures in this listing so they can be seen put together. I also did some reading up on the speakers which I had not done before. And it seems as they were Roger Russell's last and most elaborate design in a speaker system. They were something that he and his assistant worked on and designed and they went into production just before he left McIntosh. The design of the XR290's did not have the cutting corners that began to happen at McIntosh just before Roger Russell left McIntosh as their speakers design engineer. Although they tried to cut corners on this design they were not allowed to by the powers that be and the speakers were kept to their original Roger Russell design. They were the last of that era of speakers. There is more information about this on Roger Russell's website. You may know this already but the last selling price of the XR290's was $13,750.00 each or $27,500.00 for a pair when new in this Walnut finish. When one reads Roger Russell's comments about the XR290's one learns that they were McIntosh's most elaborate and expensive speaker system ever designed at that time. It seems as Roger Russell and his assistant put all of their know how and experience into the XR290.
